Aluminium is the 3rd most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It is an environmentally friendly material as it can be recycled many times without significant quality degradation. It exhibits excellent mechanical properties and is resistant to corrosion with very low maintenance costs. Aluminium frames can offer countless design options in terms of typologies and appearance, as well as surface treatments (electrostatic painting, anodising, wood imitation, etc.).

Why should I choose thermal insulating systems instead of conventional?

Aluminium as a material has a high thermal conductivity. This means that it is a good conductor of heat, carrying the temperature to which it is exposed over its entire surface. Conventional systems, also known as cold frames, do not have any material that stops the outdoor temperature from being transferred to the interior surface of the frame, inside the house. The solution is to insert a material between the inner and outer metal surface that has low thermal conductivity and strong mechanical properties. A material with an extremely high ability to stop the flow of heat (thermal insulation) is polyamide. Thermo-insulating or energy-efficient systems manage to separate external surface from the internal surface, thus interrupting the flow of heat from the external environment to the interior of the house.

By submitting the declaration of performance, the manufacturer takes responsibility for the conformity of the product with this declared performance. This declaration by the manufacturer shall be accurate and reliable.It can therefore be said that the performance declaration is a statement by the manufacturer specifying the properties of an aluminium construction.

Classification of frames based on rate of insulation

To have a measure of how much a frame resists temperature transfer, we use rate of insulation (Uw). Frames with a Uw greater than 3.2 are considered conventional (cold), frames with a coefficient between 2.1 and 3.2 are considered energy efficient (thermal insulating) and finally frames with a coefficient of less than 2.1 are considered high performance energy efficient.

The main advantages of ultra-resistant finishes are longevity and perfect retention of colour shade and gloss. The textured finish can cover possible imperfections in the substrate. It also improves the scratch resistance of the finished surface, thanks to its high resistance to scratching, abrasion and impact.

What is anodising;

It is an electrochemical passivation process of aluminium, during which its surface is chemically treated, and a thin layer of artificial oxidation is created to protect it from corrosion.

What is the Seaside Class?

Seaside Class is a certified chemical treatment process for profiles (Powder Coating Certificate).

The Seaside Class was derived from the results of research carried out in laboratories on the risk of thread corrosion of painted aluminium profiles. A process was thus created which provided for enhanced surface treatment prior to painting. This pre-treatment involves a double, alkaline and acidic attack on the metal before painting the profiles, in order to provide greater protection against corrosion in environments with particular characteristics, such as coastal or heavily polluted.  The Hellenic Aluminium Association gives the QUALICOAT certificate with a SEASIDE CLASS requirement, as confirmation that the powder coating plant, processing the aluminium profiles has the capacity to meet the requirements of this pre-treatment.

Why use certified components?

All architectural systems are designed according to specific standards and have certain performance in water and air tightness that have been tested in certified laboratories. To achieve the maximum performance stated in the certificate, the certified components recommended by the system designer should be used.

What are the criteria for selecting a frame?

When choosing a frame, the following should be considered:

  • The dimensions and the type of each frame (opening, sliding, with thermal break or conventional), to take advantage of your space and meet your needs in the best possible way.
  • The climate conditions of the area and the orientation of the house.
  • The choice of appropriate glass panel, as it greatly affects energy loss and incoming light.
  • The frame should offer a high level of thermal insulation.
  • The dimensions and thicknesses of the system must cover the selected opening so that the frame is within specification.
  • There should be cooperation between the architect, the engineer and the fabricator of the frames in order to jointly decide on the choice of a suitable system that will meet the thermal insulation, sound insulation and safety requirements of the house.
  • The frame must work perfectly with certified components, as they directly affect its performance and operation.
  • The results of the measurements and the performance of the frame indicated in the tester’s certificate, shall meet the needs of the application.
